After six years, now is finally the time for the Italians to get some proper models for their units! Today i laid the last hand on the Italian cruiser Pola (Zara-class) and the battleship Vittorio Veneto (Littorio-class), and they are looking absolutely stunning. Apart from this, i have also made some tank models and an infantry model, but this will likely be covered in the release notes.
Although the Italians aren't generally held in any great esteem for their efforts in WW2, they actually had a formidable fleet which posed a considerable power in the Mediterranean. The Zara-class cruisers were built more like small battleships than like cruisers, and were some of the only cruisers in the world equipped with two armored belts and two armored decks. They also had large, high-velocity guns which were meant to fire from long distances. The AA defense was also formidable for its time, which is reflected in the map.
Although modest when compared to other ships of its generation, such as the Bismarck and the Iowa, the Littorio class battleships had a fearsome 9x381mm main battery armament, which was larger than the 360mm guns of the King George V ships; however, they suffered from poor range and complicated reload.
The Folgore-class destroyers don't yet have a model, but i have done some work to make sure that they are unique. One of the greatest changes of the next version is that destroyers now have a secondary sink bomb attack, which is the only attack that can damage submerged submarines. The Folgore has exceptionally bad sink bomb damage, but has the added advantage that it can drop naval mines, which work very similar to anti-tank mines except that they target ships (and these can also only be spotted and killed by destroyers). This should add extra options for fortifying the bottleneck around Gibraltar.
